Saints Youngsters Win Through

Coventry 1-2 Southampton

Right, it is going to be pretty darn difficult to write a report, seeing as I was several thousand miles away at the time! So, I will just stick to the bare facts of the game.

Suffice to say that Nigel Adkins decided to stick with his habit of allowing the youngsters to play where possible. It was good to see that he also decided to play Bart in goal, after his less than edifying display between the sticks at the Championship home game with Blackpool last month.

Gary McSheffrey gave the Coventry an early lead from a strike in the fifth minute, before James Ward-Prowse levelled from former Sky Blues player, Danny Fox's cross.

But Alvin Martin came up with a crucial late headed goal, from yet another Danny Fox cross, to complete Coventry's misery.
Coventry have now lost six of their last eight games, and home fans protested before and during the game. If you look at the stats you will see that the official attendance was given as exactly 9,000. Odd that. I am told by one, or two that went to the game that they would be astounded if anywhere near that amount were in the ground.

Nigel Adkins said:

"We have a crop of youngsters we believe in and we need to aid their development path through to get experiences - good and bad - so that they can keep developing.

"Great credit must go to all the staff in our academy and first team because we want to get to a stage where 50% of the youngsters go through into the first team but that takes time. The future is bright."
