Saints Dumped Out Of The Cup

Southampton 2-3 Millwall (HT 1-1)

What a limp performance!

Adkins was clearly furious in his post match interview on Radio Solent. Rightly so. Quite a few of the players let themselves down, not least the defenders who didn't.

I am not intending to spend too much time on this coverage of a match where, to be frank, Millwall looked far more interested in winning. The trouble now is, that Saints have got themselves out of the winning habit at exactly the time some of their Championship rivals have got into it. Both Birmingham and Blackpool won games last night. In Blackpool's case it was a comprehensive and expansive win.

Saints have the squad to achieve promotion, now they have got to get back to turning in the sort of dominant performances they were routinely achieving before Christmas.

In last nights game there were some chinks of light. Notably the performances of Lallana, Lambert, young Ben Reeves, Bart's shot stopping (although distribution was not so hot), De Ridder's work rate and more glimpses of what might be from Lee.
There were cracking goals from Lallana in the first half and Lambert in the second. The controversy was the referee not giving what seems to have been a perfectly good goal for Reeves, ruling it out for offside, which most are saying it was not.

The trouble is Millwall scored through the excellent Trotter early on in the first half, with N'Guessan (how come he looked so abject when he was with Saints?) equalising late on and Feeney winning it in injury time.

Nigel Adkins said

"... the three goals we conceded and a few opportunities we presented Millwall summed up the way we have conceded goals this season. It is not acceptable."

So, Saints and the fans have to put this game behind them, forget about the FACup for another year and look forward in a positive manner to the Burnley game on Saturday
