Report

This was the first ever game between the two clubs. Stevenage are currently in League One having risen through the leagues, reaching their current position in 2010/11. The scoreline suggests it was a bit of a one sided contest, which it almost was after Billy Sharp netted soon after kick-off, only to have it ruled out for offside.

None of the Saints starting eleven from Saturday were involved and it was the first competitive outing for goalie Gazzaniga. It was also good to see Tadanari Lee making a start, having been injured in training at the tail end of last season.

Following Sharp's offside 'goal' the first half was a lacklustre affair, with Saints huffing and puffing to little effect. The second half was different. Lee opened Saints account by confidently sweeping the ball home on 53 minutes. The second goal was down to a quick bit of thinking in the Saints ranks, after the ref ruled that the Stevenage goalie had handled a deliberate back pass. The kick was taken and Sharp thumped the ball into the net before any Stevenage player had reacted. The third goal followed shortly after and what a cracker that was. The often maligned Puncheon picked the ball up at least 30 yards out, flicked the ball up, controlled it with his knee and then thumped the ball home. So, that was 0-3 to Saints.

Stevenage managed a consolation goal in injury time, but almost straight away Reeves scored to restore the three goal margin.

This was a good moral boosting result. All the more important after Saturday's disappointment. Interestingly Saints were at the same time releasing the news that they had signed Zambian international forward, Emmanuel Mayuka from BSC Young Boys of Switzerland.
