Report

A pathetic, miserable non-performance from Saints, as Leeds strolled to a place in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Older Saints fans will remember that the last time Saints were in the Premier League, way back in 2004-05, they were knocked out of the League Cup by another Championship team - Watford.

Just look at the truly pathetic stats and you can see that the motley collection of mostly second-string Saints players hardly mustered a single chance. Not a very convincing case for the aspiring first-teamers. At least Lee could claim it was his first game for many weeks. Others had no such excuse.

Midway through the first half Saints should have been behind when Luke Varney missed an open goal and hit the bar. But then his run and cross helped set up Michael Tonge, who thumped the ball past Davis from the edge of the area.

El-Hadji Diouf, who looked so out of touch when Saints fans last saw him playing for Doncaster back at the end of March, scored Leeds second two minutes from the end after Rodolph Austin's shot was parried by Davis and the final nail in the coffin was Luciano Becchio converting an injury-time penalty given away by Ben Reeves.

With their next Premier League game not until next Monday, Saints could have fielded some of their best players. Instead they missed a golden opportunity to earn their fourth win of the season. Saints lacked cohesion throughout and for large parts of the first half Emmanuel Mayuka was isolated up front on his first start.

The Leeds fans taunted Nigel Adkins with the "you're getting sacked in the morning" chant at the final whistle. Maybe not, but Saints need to win a game of football soon.
