• De Ridder 16 • Lambert 27 • Chaplow 81 • Forte 90′

Saints ground out a result to knock League Two Torquay out in the first round of the Carling Cup.
Steve De Ridder's fine first goal for Saints in the 16th minute was cancelled out by a smartly headed goal by Torquay's Lee Mansell less than a minute later.
Saints kept pushing and were rewarded when Rickie Lambert fired in one of his trade mark free kicks in the 27th minute.
The second half was quite laboured until the 70th minute when Lallana and Hammond came on for Holmes and De Ridder. The introduction of Lallana in particular changed the complexion of the match.
Richard Chaplow scored in the 81st minute followed by a scrambled effort from Forte deep into time added on.
Although I sometimes wonder at the point of these early round cup games, with the reduction of substitutes in League games from seven to five, these games now are important to give some of the fringe players a run out and important game time. Especially to someone like Holmes, who has had serious injuries and can't have played for so long for at least a couple of years.
So, Saints are safely through to the second round.
