• Hooiveld 26 • Lallana 65
Preston North End 1
• Barton 50
Saints safely negotiated the challenge of Preston North End in the Carling Cup third round thanks to a 2-1 win at St Mary’s tonight.
Unsurprisingly, Nigel Adkins continued his policy of giving many of the fringe first team players an outing. There were ten changes from the side that defeated Birmingham on Saturday, with young Ben Reeves getting a first ever start.
The first goal came in the 27th minute, when the impressive Lee Holmes’ corner was headed back across goal by Reeves and Jos Hooiveld was quickest to react and swept the ball home for his first goal for Saints.
In a reminder of the Birmingham game, Saints allowed Preston back into the game at the start of the second half. Preston equalising when Russell’s shot was parried by Bialkowski and Barton pounced on the rebound.
The key moment for Saints was when Lallana came on for Steve De Ridder in the 64th minute. Within a minute Lallana had scored the winning goal. He started the move himself, passing to Holmes on the right and running into the penalty area to connect with Holmes cross, heading in from close range.
Impressing tonight were Holmes, Reeves and Hooiveld. Holmes "All Action" display must easily make him MoM.
So, Saints 2011/12 adventure continues.
The draw for the fourth round will be on Saturday lunchtime.
