Match Report :
I just don't know where to start with this report.
We were away for the weekend, so I sat and and watched the game on BBC2 in the hotel with one of our friends we were with. He is a ManU fan, but one who actually knows where Old Trafford is and has been there. This season. Amazing I know.
The trouble is that very soon I was squirming with embarrassment. Saints were abject and when they were not being abject, they were victims of some pretty poor decisions by the officials.
It all really started to go wrong when Guly charged into the penalty area and was brought down. Penalty. This is normally when Saints fans start celebrating, but Rickie isn't playing is he? Damn. Billy Sharp steps up and looks strangely nervous. When he finally takes the penalty, he doesn't hit it cleanly and the Blackpool goalie comfortably saves it. That's not supposed to happen. That is the sort of thing which used to happen to Saints BL (Before Liebherr).
As if that wasn't bad enough, within a few minutes Morgan Schneiderlin had brought down Taylor-Fletcher inside the Saints penalty area. Penalty. This time Dobbie (Isn't he a character in Harry Potter?) firmly strikes the ball past Davis. That's how you take a penalty.
Then Saints fashioned a great chance. Danny Fox took a corner which Chaplow met at the near post and flicked on to an unmarked Hooiveld, who contrived to head it wide. Another miss that came back to haunt Saints. Straight from the resulting goal kick, Taylor-Fletcher took the ball and found Dobbie who shrugging off a challenge from Fonte, struck the ball past Davis. 2-0.
Saints continued to play their patient build up, only to find Sharp, or Guly being flagged offside. Meanwhile Blackpool seemed able to run the flanks without challenge. The managerial answer to this was to replace Chaplow with De Ridder at the start of the second half. Nothing materially changed.
Oh, except for Blackpool scoring their third goal seven minutes after the restart, when Evatt crashed home a corner.
That was effectively that. Other than my ManU friend pointing out that Saints will have to spend big if they get promoted, as this side are just not good enough. It was very hard to argue with him after a limp performance like that.
