Match Report :
The Derby goalkeeper, Frank Fielding, was possibly in the form of his life to earn his side a point against Southampton.
Let's be honest, this was a game that Saints could and should have won.
A glance at the stats on the right show that they had the lion's share of the possession, shots on target, shots off target, etc., etc.
There was an indication that it might be a difficult afternoon, when it was seen that Lallana was absent from the starting line-up. An injury of some sort was blamed for him being missing. Chaplow was to play on the left wing in his place.
It didn't start well. Saints were their usual generous selves and gave Derby a goal in the third minute
(although Adkins suggested after the match that it was offside), but from then on Saints dug in attacked in waves. But for an inspired game by the Derby goalie they would surely have won.
It remained 1-0 to Derby at the half and Saints came out in determined mood. Persistence paid off in the 61st minute with a lovely finish from Rickie Lambert to give him his eleventh goal of the season.
In spite continued pressure and more goal line heroics from Fielding in the Derby goal the game finished 1-1.
Thanks to several other results being kind to Saints they are still heading the Championship by two points from West Ham, who by coincidence are the visitors to St.Mary's on Tuesday night. It should be a cracker!
