Match Report :

This game wasn't all about Rickie Lambert, but it was pretty close. He scored his 29th and 30th goals this season. He has scored 87 in the three years he has been at Saints. A legend.

Crystal Palace were playing six youngsters, but they made the mistake of giving Rickie space and time for his goals. The first was a close range header from a Danny Butterfield cross in the first half and the second was a rasping drive from 20 yards out in the second half.

The Saints following was almost six thousand, which was pretty damned impressive and they were treated to a Lambert masterclass. Palace had their chances and Davis made a couple of finger tip saves, but on this particular day they were very definitely the support cast.

The result put Saints three points clear of Reading, but they don't play until tomorrow night at Brighton.

So, it looks more and more likely that the Saints/Reading match on the evening of Friday 13th (Oh, good choice of date!) will pretty much decide the champions of this league.

Of the four games left, Saints need to win two to be sure of a return to the Premier League. If they do that, West Ham cannot overtake them, thanks to Saints vastly superior goal difference. Nobody else is even close. Then it will just be down to Saints and Reading.

Like every other Saints fan, I am looking at all the permutations, but likewise I am sure that Nigel is doing just what he says, concentrating on one game at a time. That is just one reason why I am convinced that Saints will go up. First automatic promotion has to be achieved, then thoughts can start to turn to who will be champions.
