Match Report :

Well, what an emotional roller-coaster that was!

Having completely dominated the first half and Connolly scoring a header, after a prolonged bought of head tennis, Saints ended up hanging on by the skin of their teeth.

This was far more one sided than the score suggests. During the first half Guly had two gilt edged chances to put the match to bed and somehow contrived to miss them. As in so many recent games Lallana was the key player for Saints, making everything tick. In truth, it is a mystery how we went in at half-time only one goal to the better. It would have only been a fair reflection of the play had it been 3-0.

Late in the game Chaplow got a straight red card for a studs up challenge on one of the Barnsley players and from then on it was Saints with their backs to the wall.

During this frantic period Davis went from being virtually a bystander (an exaggeration I know!) to making two excellent saves in rapid succession and going down clutching his face after one particularly hectic exchange.

Great credit to the players that they stuck to the task and Richardson even cleared off the line in the final seconds of time added on.

This is not the Saints we have been so used to in the past, hanging on and then conceding at the the death. This was a new tougher breed, honed by Adkins and Crosby not to give an inch. I love it.

Can we stop the season now please?!

Obviously Barnsley could not continue in the same vein and the Barnsley manager, Keith Hill, who knows a thing or two about beating Saints, having done it twice last season when manager of Rochdale, switched things around. To be honest it didn't make a huge difference to their chances and Davis, in the Saints goal had little to do.

In the 70th minute Adkins brought on Chaplow to replace Guly and this was to change the whole face of the game, but not in the way that Adkins was expecting.

I also love the way they are developing players like Richardson and Seaborne, both of whom seem to be flourishing at the moment.

Although there are persistent rumours that another Centre Back is on the way to Saints and this may push Seaborne further down the pecking order.

Still, onwards, and upwards! Being top of the league didn't last more than 24 hours then, but it was nice while it lasted.
