Match Report :
I was ill when this game was played, but looking back in retrospect it was a really good point won. Listening from my sickbed to Radio5Live I was almost finished off by the seemingly one way traffic in the first half. It seemed only a matter of time before West Ham scored, sounding as it did like the final stand at The Alamo.
As the game approached twenty minutes gone there was yet one more mêlée in and around the Saints penalty area, when Billy Sharp brought down Mark Noble. West Ham had already had two fairly strong penalty claims turned down. What would happen this time? Referee Lee Probert didn't hesitate, Penalty.
But no, it wasn't going to be as simple as that. From way away from the action, Matt Taylor steamed in and floored Sharp. Why? West Ham had been awarded the penalty, so what was to be gained? The answer to this spectacular lack of discipline was that West Ham went down to ten men as Taylor was deservedly shown a straight red by Lee Probert. Taylor is a prize twonk and he continues to prove it time after time.
Returning to the penalty, Noble duly converted it and Saints were 1-0 down and West Ham were one player down.
The game turned round here and for the rest of the game it was pretty much one way traffic, with Green proving the impassable object at the end. One double save he made was astounding. In the end, well the 75th minute, Jos Hooiveld managed to stab home a loose ball past him.
Just look at the stats in the sidebar on the right. Seventeen shots, of which no fewer than twelve were on target. And one goal?!
Nigel Adkins said : "At the end of the day we've come away from home and got a point. We've totally dominated the game on the balance of play. We should have got a penalty of our own in the second half. I've watched it again and it was a clear penalty."
Sam Allardyce said : "Whinge, whine, whinge, whinge, whine"
Well, he didn't really, but it makes as much sense as what he did say! He really is a man with a chip on his shoulder. Unfortunately we may well run across him home and away next season.....
