Match Report :

I remember thinking during the second half that it would be impossible to write a rational review of the game because my sheer raw emotions had complete control.

In the car after the game the three of us could agree on very little, other than we all felt as though we had been kicked in the gonads by that last goal. As an example, one thought that Sharp had a poor game. Well excuse the feck out of me. He can have a bad game every time if he continues to score two goals each game!

Right, scores & thoughts

Davis - 6. The strange thing was that he had by far the quieter time of the two goalies, but was beaten by two exceptional strikes.

Richardson - 6. Good to see him back. Hampered by having Guly and then De Ridder in front of him, who hardly helped him when going forward.

Fonte - 6. I just feel he has struggled to impose himself on games lately. Not through lack of effort though. A superb chance to score fell to him in the second half, but he blazed it over the bar.

Hooiveld - 6. Not a bad game, but nothing that sticks in the mind.

Fox - 5. I like Fox, but his crossing was a bit wayward today. When he did get it right nobody was able to make anything of it.

Guly - 4. Infuriatingly enigmatic, but this was not a good day for our Brazilian. Ineffective.

Schneiderlin - 4. Getting himself a serious injury in an early challenge, when every player on the pitch seemed to behave like a headless chicken was a huge blow. Had already got himself booked for a daft challenge.

Hammond - 4. Seemed out of his depth.

Lallana - 6. Was marshalled well by his marker, but still managed to break away a couple of times, only to be thwarted by the Pompey goalie.

Lambert - 7. Worked well with Sharp and created several chances. Just not his day.

Sharp - 8. Back on form after Blackpool with two well taken goals. A class poacher at work.

Subs :

Cork - 8. Had a good game & covered every blade of grass. Should have started the game.

De Ridder - 4. Did nothing. Poor decision making. Poor positioning. Actually worse than Guly, who he replaced.

Harding - 4. Not really on long enough to influence things, other than not doing anything to prevent Pompey's extra time equaliser.

Conclusions :

In spite of the problems, Saints still fashioned enough chances to win the game, but were thwarted by the Pompey goalie. If you look at the stats then you can see that we were way ahead in everything, except goals.

That being so, how come I just didn't feel comfortable at any stage in the game?

And for God's sake, Saints only had to last four minutes after we scored our second goal. The team should have been able to do that.

Oh yes, thanks to those morons running onto the pitch from the Ichen/Chapel corner. Don't bother coming again.

Palace next on Monday.
