Academy Graduates 2013

The 2013 Pair to Watch

Last season, four Academy graduates were given the chance to join up with the First Team during the pre-season. These were Calum Chambers, Jack Stephens, James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw, all of whom were involved in the First Team squad throughout last season.

The impact of Shaw in particular was amazing, making the left back slot his own in competition with the vastly more experienced Danny Fox. Ward-Prowse also impressed, but he was mostly limited to appearances from the substitutes bench and his target now must be to force his way into the managers reckoning on a more regular basis. Chambers and Stephens were nowhere near as high profile as their co-graduates, but maybe this was because the chances didn't fall their way, rather than they were not considered up to it.

All four feature heavily in this years pre-season tour and now another couple of Academy graduates have been given the chance to join up with the Saints First Team to continue their development. These lucky youngsters are Lloyd Isgrove and Jordan Turnbull.

Lloyd Isgrove

DOB : 12.01.1993
Height : 5'10"
Weight : 11st 5lbs
Position : Midfielder
Qualifies as Welsh, although he hails from Yeovil and has been at the club since he was 9. He has a lot of pace and primarily plays out on the wing. He is blessed with the sort of rugged good looks that attracts plenty of attention from the female fans. In fact I have seen him described on another forum as 'Prince Charming'. Although an Academy player, he has already made an appearance for the First Team, when he came on as a substitute during the Capital One Cup game at Leeds United in October 2012.

Jordan Turnbull

DOB : 30.10.1994
Height : N/A
Weight : N/A
Position : Defender
Jordan is a centre-back, who came to Saints from Swindon Town's youth set-up in 2007. He was a regular in the U21's last season and has impressed in a position which has been a problem area for Saints in recent times. It is clear that he has bulked up a lot over the winter months and this will be a crucial year for him.
Both Isgrove and Turnbull have played in the early games of the tour, but can probably expect to see less game time as the intensity is increased in the approach to the new Premier League season. The examples of Shaw and Ward-Prowse should be sufficient motivation for Isgrove and Turnbull to make the most of this opportunity and it will be interesting to see their progress in the coming season and if the famed Saints Academy production line has produced another star, or two.
