    |After the capitulation to Manchester United on Saturday, there was an expectation of changes, and Russell Martin suggested that there would be in the pre-match press conference.

Saints have been rubbish at Everton over the years, and I well remember one match many moons ago when the referee gave both Peter Osgood and Stevie Williams their marching orders (Yes, I am that old!). Just don’t mention John Bailey to me. Google the name if you don’t know who he is. So, expectations were pretty low on getting a result at Goodison Park. The only glimmer of hope is that Everton are the only club below Saints in the Premier League.

Saints will be wearing their yellow shirts and black shorts second strip.

    Team News

    |When the team news came through, Martin had been as good as his word, with ten changes. The only player to retain his place was Ugochukwu. In came McCarthy, Taylor, Wood, Harwood-Bellis as captain, Bree, Lallana, Fraser, Aribo, Cornet and Armstrong.

    |It was a 7.45 pm kickoff at the ground that I literally have no good memories of. One in particular sticks in my mind: the day Peter Osgood and Stevie Williams received their marching orders from the ref. The Saints fans blamed John Bailey, Everton left back at the time, and for as long as he played football, he got roundly booed every time he came to The Dell. Saints have the dubious honour of being the last away side to play at Goodison Park. I hope they burn it down afterwards. Not that I hold a grudge, of course.

I was listening to Adam and Jo on BBC Radio Solent, and it quickly became apparent that there was little atmosphere at the ground. You could clearly hear Lallana barking instructions to the other Saints players. The only entertainment for us at home was Adam complaining about how little room there was in the press section and how the unadjustable table was cutting into his legs, much to Jo’s amusement.

The home side has had just as bad a start to the new Premier League season as Saints, so it would be a good chance for both sides to taste a small amount of success.

McCarthy was immediately called into action, saving smartly at the near post from Beto. Apart from this brief moment, the away side didn’t really look troubled until just before the 20th minute...

Harwood-Bellis blocked an attempted cross, which went behind for a corner and was taken quickly. Saints could not clear it, and it bounced around off a couple of heads before Doucouré stole in and headed it past McCarthy. Twenty minutes gone, and it was 1-0.

Shortly after this, Everton had a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-0 when two players broke clean through the Saint’s lines, but McCarthy stood firm and saved from Lindstrøm’s tame shot.

The game was end-to-end, and after a Harwood-Bellis challenge on Beto in the Saints area, he threaded a pass through to Ugochukwu. In turn, he passed out to Fraser on the left wing. Dixon wiped out the wee Scot as he tried to cross the ball, for which he was booked, and Saints had a free kick. Fraser and Taylor stood over the ball, and when the ref blew, the left back whipped in a terrific cross, which met the diving head of Harwood-Bellis, and it flew into the net past keeper Virginia. Just over the half-hour, and it was all-square at 1-1.

Shortly after, that man Lindsrøm broke through the Saints’ defence again and was one-on-one with McCarthy, but again, the Saints’ goalie stood his ground, narrowing the angle, and the Dane fluffed his finish, with Alex making a great save.

So, we arrived at the end of the half-all square. At the restart, Fernandez replaced Lallana, which presumably was planned management of Adam’s minutes as he gradually gets match-fit.

The second half began, and it was increasingly frantic stuff, a proper cup tie, but Saints were looking far more controlled in defence.

As we approached the sixty-minute mark, Martin made three changes. Off went Ugochukwu, Fraser and Cornet, to be replaced by Downes, Brereton Díaz and Dibling. Downes and Dibling made their presence felt immediately, with young Tyler twisting and turning through the Everton defence before unleashing a fierce shot which was only inches over the bar.

I had forgotten that Carabao Cup matches do not have extra time. If the score is level at the end of ninety minutes, the game goes straight to penalties. You could sense the tension increase the nearer we got to the end of normal time.

Everton had one last chance from a corner, but it fizzled out as Young’s shot went well wide.

    So, penalties:

    • Saints started with Fernandes, who converted his kick with no fuss.
      • ⚽️ - 0-1
    • Everton’s Keane scored his with a firmly struck shot.
      • ⚽️ - 1-1
    • Saints’ second was scored by Ross Stewart, who had come on for Armstrong late on.
      • ⚽️ - 1-2
    • McNeil scored for Everton, sending McCarthy the wrong way.
      • ⚽️ - 2-2
    • Brereton Díaz scored Saints third.
      • ⚽️ - 2-3
    • Ndiaye scored Everton’s third.
      • ⚽️ - 3-3
    • Harwood-Bellis scored for Saints.
      • ⚽️ -3-4
    • Lindstrøm hits the post, but it still goes in.
      • ⚽️ - 4-4
    • Aribo scores with the minimum of fuss.
      • ⚽️ - 4-5
    • Harrison scores Everton’s fifth.
      • ⚽️ - 5-5 - Sudden death now!
    • Bree steps up, tension all over his face, but scores, sending Virginia the wrong way.
      • ⚽️ - 5-6
    • Ashley Young steps up, looking calm, and strikes the ball well, low and to the left, but McCarthy guesses right and pushes the ball against the upright, and it flies harmlessly away.
      • ❎ - Saints Win 5-6!!
    Wow!

    Man of the Match

    |Several names immediately sprang to mind: Taylor Harwood-Bellis was like a man possessed, intent on making up for his difficult start to the season; Fernandes, who is increasingly looking like an excellent signing, but I suppose, for his saves during the match and his matchwinning penalty save there can only be one winner - Alex McCarthy
