Brighton 3-0 Saints

Saints put in a good performance against WSL side Brighton in the League Cup. Brighton fielded not only ex-Lioness Fran Kirby, but the Summer’s European Championship player of the tournament, Michelle Agyemang, while Saints made changes and fielded some of their young players.

Four days after a 1-0 League Cup win for Saints at Eastleigh’s Silverlake Stadium, they face Portsmouth again, this time at Fratton Park in the league. In this fixture last season, Saints put 5 past Portsmouth.

Saints made changes, and, due to the good form of Issy Watts, fit-again Megan Collett was pushed forward, with Elle Brazil dropping to the bench.

Birmingham 1-2 Saints

  • St Andrews Stadium
  • Sunday 5th October 2025
  • Attendance: A few thousand at a guess

Scorers:
Birmingham
  • Ji So-Yun 90’+1
Southampton
  • Primus 20’
  • Peplow 46’

Mid-table Southampton travelled to St. Andrews to face league leaders Birmingham City in the WSL2, while I sat on the sofa watching the match on YouTube. This looked like it would be a tough fixture. Last season, the Blues narrowly missed out on promotion, and when they came to St Mary’s, they were comfortably better than the Saints.

I’m never confident when Saints play at Eastleigh’s ground. I don’t think we’ve ever played well there, apart from the FA Cup game against Man United, but we lost that one too. With injuries in the squad, five teenagers were named on the bench. Milly Mott started her first game of the season in place of Megan Collett, who picked up an injury in the Bristol City game. She was fit enough to be named on the bench though. Collett is one of the most important and experienced players Saints have, yet she is only 20.
