Round 3, St.Mary's, Wednesday, 19:45
Southampton win 6-5 on penalties
James Ward-Prowse scored the equaliser from the penalty spot deep into time added at the end of the first half
|A run of just one win in nine games - culminating in Sunday's 4-1 loss at Newcastle - led to the sacking of Ralph Hasenhuttl as Southampton boss on Monday.
Nathan Jones who is widely expected to take charge at St Mary's within the next couple of days, was in the stands as Saints beat Sheffield Wednesday 6-5 on penalties in the Carabao Cup third round.
He saw Josh Windass give League One Wednesday the lead, before James Ward-Prowse equalised from the penalty spot just before the break.
Theo Walcott had two efforts cleared off the line and Stuart Armstrong hit the bar in the second half, but with the game ending in stalemate, it went to penalties. Five all and then sudden death. Alex McCarthy then saved Dominic Iorfa's spot-kick which meant it was Saints who progressed.
