Match Report

|Well, where on earth do I start with this insane match?

The only thing that was predictable about it was the starting lineup. In my guess at the starting lineup the day before, I got the starting eleven precisely right; I even got all but one of the subs right. I only got one wrong because I put Meghoma down on the bench, but Martin named Sulemana instead. All of that shows not how clever I was but how obvious our starting eleven is now and how good our bench has suddenly become. This strength in depth was about to be illustrated in the most dramatic fashion.

Thankfully, the weather relented after the rain of biblical proportions that we had to face for the FACup 4th Round replay on Tuesday. The crowd was also about twelve thousand more today.

Saints started brightly enough, but then so did Huddersfield, which was a bit of a surprise. The visitors were going toe to toe with us and pressing Saints high up the pitch. This unsettled the players in red and white.

Downes then went down injured and tried to play on but was clearly in trouble, so on the half hour, he was taken off to be replaced by Joe Rothwell. It looked like a potentially serious injury with some time out, so hopefully, it isn't as bad as it seemed.

Huddersfield then played some lovely football, and a dangerous, teasing ball was played across the face of the goal. It evaded all the Saints' defenders but was met by Thomas racing in on the right to stick it past Manning's outstretched boot and beyond Baz into the corner to make it 0-1. The few Huddersfield fans were raucous, but the rest of the stadium was silent.

Just before the end of the half, Saints had a chance to equalise when Adams won a free kick right in the centre, just in front of the D. Stu Armstrong took the kick but it sailed just over the bar.

Just as we were thinking that at least things hadn't got any worse before the break, they did. Saints were well and truly caught cold as the Huddersfield players cut through a non-existent defence, and Kasumu slammed the ball into the net. 0-2. This wasn't in the script; what on earth was going on?

There was no time to react before the ref blew for the end of the half, and there was some booing, which I took to be at the referee, who had been pretty dire but could equally have been some fans not happy with the ease with which Huddersfield had just scored their second.

Quite frankly, I was in shock during the break. This was no way to end the unbeaten run, which looked highly likely unless something dramatic happened. Little did I know.

The second half started with Brooks coming on for Adams, and Saints were playing with a renewed urgency, and they looked much more fluid. However, this was spoiled by first Manning falling over in the penalty area (for which he was rightly booked) and then Fraser, who was shoved over, but it probably wasn't a penalty either.

From the mêlée that followed Fraser being upended, the ball went for a corner, which Stu Armstrong took. Bodies surrounded the keeper, and all he could do was punch it clear.... as far as the waiting Rothwell, who was standing in the D all on his own and, just volleyed the ball straight back past the keeper. 1-2.

That was an outstanding goal, and I must have watched it back about a dozen times that night when I got home. The stadium erupted. Game on.

It was amazing how the atmosphere in the stadium changed in those few seconds, but things were about to get even better. There was a real purpose to Saints' play now. Huddersfield couldn't get near the ball now, and then Brooks played a great pass through to Rothwell, who steadied the ball, looked up and shot past the keeper. 2-2, and the man on loan from Bournemouth had just scored his first and second goals for the club just one minute apart!

The stadium erupted, and I hadn't heard a noise like that for years. There was a real expectation that we would go on to win now.

Adam Armstrong then had a couple of decent chances to put Saints ahead in the game for the first time, but although he was doing all the hard work, it just wasn't happening for him.

In a bizarre twist, Huddersfield then had a goal to put them 2-3 ahead. There was no real danger until Matos shot at goal more out of hope than anything. Unfortunately, the shot hit Smallbone and ballooned up, dropping beyond Baz and into the far corner of the net.

This only quietened the Saints fans for a minute, and then the noise returned.

Martin was talking with his coaches, and players started getting ready to come on. In short order, Sulemana came on for Stu Armstrong, Edozie for Fraser, and Mara for Adam Armstrong. That had a dramatic and instant impact. Huddersfield were being pulled all over the place and seemed unable to cope with the pace of the front three.

Huddersfield seemed out on their feet and began some awful time-wasting, which the referee didn't initially seem to clamp down on.

With ten minutes of normal time remaining, Manning went up the left, cutting infield and passed to Rothwell, who went to cross to Mara, but somehow Lees stuck a foot out and directed the ball past his keeper for an own goal. The game was level again at 3-3. Madness!

Four minutes later, Walker-Peters to Brooks to Mara. Goal! 4-3. The crowd erupts.

The action wasn't over yet though.

The exhausted Huddersfield were having a 'mare, and when Brooks passed to Mara, the defenders crowded around him and tried to stop him from scoring. The young Frenchman just refused to be beaten and flicked the ball to Edozie, who took one step, spun and fired into the net. Goal! 5-3. Party time.

The ninety minutes were up, and it was clear that the ref had been paying attention to the timewasting as he added thirteen minutes of extra time.

As extra time ticked by with Saints passing the ball to each other, a completely broken Huddersfield team could only watch.

What an afternoon. I don't think I will forget that for a long time. As for Man of the Match? Are you joking? There is no way I would single out one player; they were all magnificent.

One final thought: the impact that the substitutes had was astounding. All the Saints' goalscorers were substitutes, as were those providing the assists. That doesn't happen often.

Oh yes, a final, final thought: the unbeaten run continues for another game, at least...
