Saints signed 23 year old Dutch central defender Wesley Hoedt from Italian side Lazio on the 22nd of August 2017 for a reported fee of £15M (€17M).
Hoedt was born in Alkmaar and spent his early footballing years in AZ Alkmaar's academy. On 12 December 2013, he made his first team debut for AZ in the Europa League against PAOK F.C. of Thessaloniki, Greece.
Hoedt was promoted to the first team for the following season of 2014–15.
Hoedt's left AZ in 2015 and the Italian side, Lazio signed him on a free transfer. He signed a four-year contract and scored his first goal for the club on 21 August 2016 in a 4–3 away win over Atalanta.
Hoedt has represented the Netherlands at U15, U20 and U21 level. In 2017 he was called into the full squad and at the time of his move to Saints had played 4 full games for the Netherlands.
