Saints had failed to beat West Ham in their previous eight matches, but had not competed for eleven days after a postponement to last week’s Brentford match and so were at least well rested. The additional factor for Ralph to consider was the home match against Spurs, with less than 48 hours between the two games.
Ralph made four changes to the starting eleven. Bednarek replacing the Covid stricken Lyanco and Theo Walcott replacing the similarly affected Tella. A welcome face back in goal was Fraser Forster, making his first Premier League start of the season, while top scorer Armando Broja was joined in attack by Nathan Redmond.
